Sandy started to withdraw from his social life, stopped trying in school, and quit his newspaper route. At the time, his mother, teachers, and friends had no idea what was going on with Sandy. Tragically, it was too late by the time they did find out.

The Voices

Sandy had started hearing voices in his head, which he believed were ghosts that were haunting his bedroom and home. The voices started ordering Sandy to do things and, at one point, Sandy bought a Ouija board to try and communicate with the ghosts…

Suicidal

According to Sandy, he thought about killing himself on more than one occasion, but the voices always talked him out of it. At the same time, Sandy became fascinated with horror films and started watching as many as he could get his hands on.

Warlock

But when Sandy watched Warlock, a 1989 horror film about a male witch that kills unbaptized boys to make a flying potion, everything changed and there was no going back. The voices told Sandy that if he wanted to please Satan, he’d have to commit a similar crime…

Plotting The Sacrifice

After watching the movie, Sandy became obsessed with the idea of sacrificing a boy in order to please the voices in his head and Satan. Sandy began planning the perfect sacrifice, and on July 18, 1995, Sandy finally put his plan into action.

                               The Playdate

On that Tuesday afternoon, Sandy Charles invited 8-year-old William Martin and 7-year-old Jonathan George Thimpsen over to play baseball in his backyard. The Afternoon started off like any other playdate, but then Charles did something that would change their lives forever…

The Murder

While playing baseball, Charles hit the ball far out into the woods. When the three boys went out to search for the it, Charles grabbed his weapons, a beer bottle, a knife, and a rock, that he had hidden in the woods before the boys came over that afternoon.

                                        The Ritual

Charles lunged at Johnathan and stabbed him with the knife before beating him with the beer bottle and the rock. Charles then ran back to his house, grabbed another knife from the kitchen, and went back to his victim to cut off 7 pieces of skin…

Missing Boy

Once he was finished with the ritual, Charles and William dragged Johnathan further into the woods and left him there. However, it wasn’t long before Johnathan’s family noticed their 7-year-old was missing and the community started searching everywhere for him.

An Investigation Begins

Soon after, Johnathan’s body was discovered in the woods not far from his grandmother’s house. The 7-year-old’s head was crushed in and his throat was slit. It was clear that Johnathan didn’t die of natural causes, so police immediately opened an investigation…

Witnesses

According to witnesses, Johnathan was last seen playing with Charles and William so the police went straight to the boys and started questioning them. At first, both of the boys denied having anything to do with Johnathan’s death.

The Confession

But then, both William and Charles confessed. Charles explained that he had planned out the murder, which he had hoped would impress Satan. Charles also told police that he kept the patches of skin in a can next to the furnace in his basement…

Charged With Murder

Because William was just 8 years old at the time of the murder, he was technically a minor so he was not charged for his part in the crime. Charles, on the other hand, was 14, so police charged him with the murder of Johnathan Thimpsen.

The Trial Begins

During June 1996, Charles’ trial finally began and his lawyer pleaded not guilty because of mental incapacity. Charles’ defense also argued that his difficult childhood lead to his mental illness and that he was easily influenced by horror movies…

The Court’s Decision

Charles, who was moaning throughout the trial, was deemed insane and therefore not criminally responsible. However, he wasn’t free to go. At his sentencing, the judge ordered Charles be sent to the North Battleford Saskatoon Psychiatric Center.

                                              Where He Is Today

Over the years, Charles was transferred back and forth between the Regional Psychiatric Center in Saskatoon. Today, Charles is 36 years old and is currently at the Regional Psychiatric Center. He claims he is working on his anger issues and made a request, which has since been denied, to start being socialized so he can one day re-enter society.
